Melbourne Festival’s Art & Architecture Trail is undoubtedly the highlight of our programme but there is much more to enjoy each year.
Each year over 140 professional artists exhibit their work in 70 venues around the heart of Melbourne. Each year we try to include as broad a spectrum of mediums, styles and materials and try to achieve a mix of new artists with artists who have exhibited at Melbourne before to keep the Trail fresh.
Other highlights of the Art Trail include the exhibition of work by young East Midlands Artists shortlisted for Melbourne Festival Emerging Artists Award at Melbourne Assembly Rooms in High Street. The quality, and variety of entries was excellent this year and we are looking forward to seeing how our young artists developed their ideas into the finished pieces you will see in September.
Possibly the most entertaining parts of the Festival are the family activities. In 2019 there’s A RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE creeping around the Trail with lots of jungle themed activities, music and storytelling each day. Art by local Schools inspired by our theme will be exhibited in The Vicarage and Pool Cottage Gardens and Melbourne Fire Station.
Each year Melbourne Festival Art & Architecture Trail has a special project and a theme linked to projects within the community. In 2018 our main project was PopUp Poppies Melbourne creating 4680 Poppies to commemorate the Grenadier Guards who died in WW1. Our local knitters and sewers have embraced Flower Power this year making multi coloured flowers to decorate the Trail.
Although the Art & Architecture Trail has become the biggest part of the Melbourne Festival Music and Performances are still important. Our programme featured a mix of local groups and other talent. Highlights this year are our Comedy Night, Hot House Jazz, Choros Amici and The Dime Notes.
